entrance to the wharf
i still think my work is decent enough and at least worth blogging about. this was taken hand-held around 2pm in the afternoon. the fisherman's wharf, which is just around 200 meters away from the ferry terminal, was the first of the many tourist destinations we visited in macau. this was during day 2 of our 3-day trip to HK.
my camera was already automatically set to produce bracketed shots because i was taking landscape images of the wharf. i realized i needed that in order to capture enough details on both the sky and subject. in the end, i forgot to remove bracketing and ended up shooting the door with three varying exposures as well. buti na lang kasi that gave me the flexibility to create this HDR image.
im not too happy with the framing and im somewhat bothered by the tilt. however, i love the golden colors produced. and in my mind, im imagining that these are doorways that will lead to a place that is truly grand and divine.

the one where the great buddha says hello
among the many shots i have taken of the sitting buddha, this one came out a favorite because of the unusually friendly expression of the buddha's face. from other angles, it seems to me that the buddha looks too dignified, too formal and impersonal. from this angle however, he looks as if he smiles and waves "hello," as if he knows my name.
i took three shots from this angle, bracketing with a difference of 2/3 overall exposure. i thought this was a good idea especially since the subject was backlit and i had little time to figure out how to expose my subject correctly. i used photomatix in order to generate the HDR image and photoshop to adjust the hue and sharpen the image.
the visit to lantau was during the third day of our 3-day trip. so although i had to catch my breath in each of the 268 steps and sweat profusely during the ascend to the "altar of heaven", i can happily say that it was worth it. i have saved the best for last indeed.

burst of colors
i took my camera and chose a setting of 1/8 for the shutter speed. i shot the photo and tried zooming the lens out during exposure. after reviewing the output, i realized that i needed more time during exposure to exaggerate movement and create a more abstract pattern. i switched to manual mode and adjusted both shutter and aperture. the final setting for the photo is: 1/5, f5.6, iso 100.
i dont really do a lot of zooming in or out when taking photos, so that was the most challenging part for me. perhaps from the photo, you can see that my hands were a little shaky. thats my left hand trying to adjust the focal length, hehe. may pagka-pasmado kasi.

Blue
once i saw that my settings were enough to capture interesting patterns and record streaks of light, i switched to point-and-shoot mode and had fun. i had so much fun that i kept shooting even while crossing the street. right there in the middle, hehe.
please feel free to visit the "abstract" set in my flickr for other photos taken that evening.

The 10 Commandments in Photography
1. Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's camera. Thou shall improve thy photography skills and match or exceed the performance of the camera before thinking of buying a new one. Though shall take good care of thy camera.
2. Thou shall not take the camera manual for granted.
3. Thou shall master the exposure triangle and respect the histogram.
4. Thou shall learn and follow good composition techniques but have the guts to break them once in a while.
5. Thou shall learn how to critique thy own work, be willing to have thy work critiqued by others and discover and develop thy own style in time. Thou shall avoid copying the work of others.
6. Thou shall learn how to lock the exposure, adjust the metering mode, the white balance, aperture, ISO and shutter speed of thy own camera by heart.
7. Thou shall not ignore the tripod, the various filters, the built-in flash, the off-camera flash, the reflectors and the diffusers and use them when necessary. Thou shall not rely on image processing software as much as possible.
8. Thou shall learn how to “salvage” a photo when the seventh commandment has been broken, using any chosen image processing software. Thou shall shoot in RAW on difficult lighting situations. Thou shall also learn how to enhance a photo (crop a photo, straighten a photo, adjust the contrast and brightness, sharpen a photo) and convert a photo to B&W.
9. Thou shall learn how to build a portfolio and learn how to protect thyself with copyrights.
10. Thou shall always charge the batteries prior to a shoot and bring enough CF/SD cards during the shoot. Thou shall bring the camera, the right lenses and thyself to the shoot. Thou shall have fun while shooting :)

ma mon luk
we both ordered siopao which ma mon luk is *famous* for and mami, of course. she had beef mami and i had chicken. the food was not as enjoyable as i had hoped, but i would prefer them over chowking's version of siopao and mami for sure.
i could not resist taking photos of the place because it looks something like what you would see in the old movies, when FPJ or Dolphy were still dominating the local silver screens. it was like being transported back in time! very nostalgic :)

happy day
since i have not used a film camera before for serious photography work, i cannot really comment about the quality produced by the software. the film effect i chose supposedly emulates the result of a "fuji superia 100" film. im not familiar with that kind of film and im not really sure if it is a good one. from what i saw, it gave out vibrant tones which i dont think saturation adjustments in photoshop could have produced.
im loving the film effects and the nik software so far. its giving me a great many options in terms of editing photos.

full moon
i have always preferred sunsets over moon shots but that night, something about the moon and the sky begs me to bring out my camera and take pictures. starting at f/11, ISO 100 and 1/100, i took shots. of the many frames taken, around 30 or so, this one was most decent.
i did not know at first whether to write about this photo or not. but this morning, while browsing through a magazine, i was reminded of this photo when i saw pictures taken by red ognita. his moon was bigger (but in a quarter) and his clouds were still. my moon was full although my clouds are drifting. i dont know yet which i prefer, but i vow to take another moon shot when im once again in a tall building or an elevated place.

wedding layout for hannah
thanks to nightfate for the photoshop coloring actions and to hawksmont for the floral brush. thanks also to LadyVictoire for the script brushes which provided texture for the layout.
without these add-ons, my wedding layout would not have been possible.

kuya
while shooting for a prenup sometime last march (nakisingit lang), i saw these kids walking down the stairs of the manila theater. im not sure where they are going and why they were in a bit of a hurry, but i cant help but take photos of them. it was noontime and i was in landscape preset mode, which was a good thing kasi the shutter calculated was pretty fast. however, i was not in a burst mode kaya there were a lot of good shots i was not able to take. at least i had my 150mm lens on. these kids were pretty far away from where i was standing.
for me, this was an endearing moment. something i hope my kuya and i had when we were kids. sana rin we had a picture similar to this, pero wala. hehe. we had a few pictures taken together, mostly wacky actually, we loved the camera even when we were young. but there were very few candid ones and none which shows he was taking care of me as my older brother. sayang. im sure that he did in his own way :)
this goes without saying i guess... but im saying it just the same: im dedicating the photo to my one and only kuya :) thanks so much for all the help especially during our recent wedding shoots together. salamat not just for lending me your precious canon 40D but also for making it easy for me to take photos as you worry about where the light should come from and how intense it should be. that way, i was able to concentrate on art direction and composition. i thought the collaboration was pretty successful based on how happy our clients were with our work.
bro, thanks uli! :)

wedding photography class
there are so many learnings that day, and here are a few which i thought made an impact on me most:
- the preferred shirt colors for wedding photographers are gray or dark blue. i used to think it was white.
- when you create a service contract, you need to think of protecting yourself. be explicit in saying that you will not be covering any family dinner or gathering that will take place after the official reception.
- if the reception is not well-organized or does not have a program, be prepared to drive the ceremony yourself. you need to know the customs traditionally observed during receptions such as the eating of the cake, the drinking of the wine which follows after the best man's toast, the first dance, the release of the doves, etc.
for photos during the class, please feel free to visit my multiply or flickr site. your comments and critiques are welcome. thanks!

those other flash modes
anyway, here is where you can go to learn more about them.
for me the lesson really here is to keep shooting, whether in low-light conditions or not. hihi. now i cant wait to get my hands on my oly again.

infinite sadness
upon learning a few weeks ago (while shooting a prenup with sherwin) that i can trigger the flash off-camera, i was elated and immediately planned a trip to quiapo. i thank God for the fact that hidalgo is only 20-30 minutes away from my lola's house and only 2 short jeepney rides away. i can go there anytime i feel like i need cheering up.
anyway... to achieve the soft and directed lighting on the photo, i placed the Vivitar flash on the topmost row of a book cabinet (situated at the left-hand side) within the room and had the flash pointing upwards. i wanted the light to bounce-off from our ceiling. flash intensity was at 1/2 or full setting and ISO was at 100. my camera was placed on top of a large box, some books and magazines and as before, i have set the 12-second timer to allow myself almost enough time to walk-away from the camera and pose.
it took so many takes and a lot of sweat before i thought i had enough to work with. it was tiring but fun. yes, fun even though i do not look like im having fun in the photo. even more fun was the editing part. i used photoshop cs2's "omni" lighting effect to further enhance the mood.
your comments, critiques and even questions are welcome. thanks and God bless!

andrew+angie collage
to generate the square photos from your original photos, you have to choose the "fixed size" option for the selector tool and indicate desired values. for this 8"x10" collage, each square photo has a length of 600px on each side. copying from the original photo and pasting into the collage should work after this. a new layer will be generated for each square photo copied onto the collage, which for easy reference, i renamed as "pic1", "pic2", until "pic9".
to generate the borders, i have used the stroke blending option and chose "inside" as stroke position and 80% as opacity. this blending option is applied to each layer containing the square photos. the color of the stroke had to be modified to cccc99. it was originally set to red which did not blend the palette i was aiming for.
choosing carefully what photos and what details to show and how to order them is the fun part and something which any story-teller should be able to do. there's no step by step tutorial that i can share with you in this one but i can say that experimenting would help a lot in here. i had to reorder the photos thrice before i was contented, i think.
im probably going to create another collage similar to this after the wedding, but hopefully using sloppy borders next time. ill share with you all the results afterwards.
hope you guys were able to learn something! let me know if you have questions :)

first time to use channel mixers to alter the colors of a photo. to achieve this effect, i used either the blue or the green channel to remove the the blue hues from the photo and highlight the greens. it surprised me to find out that there's this much "green" in the sky but i very much welcomed the unexpected effect.

happy walk
i took several photos of this adorable kid and i couldnt just leave without showing him what his pictures looked like. whether he liked his picture or not, i cannot tell for sure but i certainly hope he did. it is always a pleasure to shoot children, but i now believe that it is more special to shoot special children like this kid. every moment of interaction i had with them, however brief, will certainly cherished and hopefully, never forgotten.
thanks to mavic for taking this photo.
deep excavation
im slowly becoming a fan of low-light photography. i used to avoid situations wherein i will be compelled to use high ISO or slow shutters due to the grain and noise that my sensor will produce, but lately i find myself wanting to shoot during the night. nothing of this kind can be made possible of course without the help of a tripod and in my case, a supportive boyfriend who will drive me to these places, watch over me as i compose and shoot and re-compose and shoot and re-compose and shoot again and again... thanks, JP! thank you for 'spoiling' me from time to time and letting me shoot even during the odd hours of the night in the most unconventional places. i love you, be :)
settings for this photo was iso 320, f8 (or f5.6) and 2.5 seconds. i can lower iso and set the shutter to a longer time period but this is what i prefer. the final output had to be processed in photoshop to alter the colors and give the scene a purple & yellow cast. i wanted a warmer tone basically. exposure had to be adjusted as well to bring out the lights in the building.
this was taken in fort bonifacio, by the way at around 1AM. sa likod ng serendra. please feel free to send your critique and comments.
salamat and God bless :)

mallows
i have always wanted to capture something like this and im glad to finally be able to do it. i like capturing the softness of both the texture and the color of marshmallows and composing the shot such that you get a very relaxed and child-like feeling from it.
more still-life photos from my multiply set entitled, "still-life".
